5 Acrylic Techniques Every Beginner Must Know

Discover five essential acrylic techniques that every beginner artist should master — from dry brushing to palette knife work.

5 Acrylic Techniques Every Beginner Must Know

Here are 5 acrylic painting techniques for beginners (theory only):

1. Dry Brush Technique

This involves using a brush with minimal paint and little to no water. The brush is dragged lightly across the surface, allowing the texture of the canvas to show through. It creates a rough, broken effect rather than smooth coverage.

2. Blending (Wet-on-Wet)

Blending is done by applying two or more colors while they are still wet and softly merging them together. This technique helps create smooth transitions between colors, commonly used for skies or gradients.

3. Layering (Glazing)

Layering means building up a painting in multiple thin coats of paint. Each layer is allowed to dry before adding the next. When paint is diluted, it creates a transparent “glaze” that adds depth and richness.

4. Dabbing / Stippling

This technique uses repeated tapping or dotting motions with a brush, sponge, or cloth. Instead of smooth strokes, small dots or marks are built up to create texture and visual interest.

5. Palette Knife Technique

Instead of a brush, paint is applied using a flat knife. This allows for thick, bold applications of paint and creates strong texture. It is often used for expressive or abstract styles.
